Is This Story True? Join Me Tonight at Let's Talk (Story-)Shop

When I perform at story slams, I typically have people approach me after the show and ask me if my story is real.

The thing about most story slams is that the stories you tell need to be real. Some people choose to make up stuff.

I don't.

Life is plenty bizarre without any help from me.

Then they tell me their fantastical stories, and I could ask them the same questions.

But I know better.

There are incredible stories out there and people need to hear them.

This newsletter is the result of wanting to help others tell their personal stories. Why? Well, I'll let this quote tell you.

"Preserve your memories, keep them well, what you forget you can never retell." -Louisa May Alcott

It is why I started an in-person storytelling circle here in Petaluma and the reason I am starting to host a weekly, free, Facebook live Let's Talk (Story-)Shop to workshop your first personal stories.

Let's Talk (Story-)Shop

Starting tonight, I'll host a weekly Facebook Live session from The Story Frame Facebook Page. It starts at 8:15 PM Pacific Time.

If you are on Facebook or Instagram, make sure to say hi! These are my personal accounts, too, so be nice!

Let's Talk (Story-)Shop will be a live session to draft stories. I will take fifteen minutes to show you how I use my free cheat sheet to outline a story, and then I'll finish the first draft on the spot. Tonight, I want to talk about a time I was in the Southwest of Ireland and I was missing home and its culinary comforts.

After that, I'll open the floor to answer your questions about writing your first story. (i.e. How to dive into a story? How to create more tension? How to make it funny? How to create a hook? Or more practical questions like what if x sees this?

West Side Stories Grandslam

I recently won February’s Story Slam. See video below.

If you are in the Bay Area, you should check out the Annual Grand Slam on the second Wednesday of December. The Mystic sits 500 people and the tickets have sold fast for fifteen years straight because locals know how much fun it is to watch twelve incredible performers in one night.

I mean it, if you are in the area, come and check it out! I’ll be there! Actually, it will be me fifth year there. But who is counting? I am. You should, too. Come on, let’s do this!

I am Colombian and I Have Never Smoked Weed

The Story You Keep Telling Is the One You Need to Write
You know that story you've told three times this month? The one about the meeting that went sideways. Or the conversation with your kid that changed how you see parenting. Or that moment at work when everything clicked. It recently happened to me with my daughter. She told me what she had learned at school and the art project she was doing for Martin Jr., and how it turned out to be that she wa...
Trick Your Brain Into Writing: The One Phrase I Use to Overcome Resistance
My brain makes excuses. "This story needs more thought." "I should outline first." "Maybe tomorrow when I'm more inspired." All lies. Just resistance dressed up as wisdom. I found a phrase that bypasses all of it: "I'm just going to..." That's it. I'm just going to open the document. I'm just going to write the subject line. I'm just going to type one sentence about that story I always tell at ...
The Storytelling Power of First Times: Six Rejections and a Bag of Candy
For writing personal stories, I love writing about first times. As time goes by and you become older, there is so much nuance that goes into these stories. The younger generation might not be ableĀ to fully appreciate those times and your vivid detail will give them a better sense of how things used to be. Your contemporaries will reminisce about the good old days. For example, my first business...
